February is National Cherry Month!! Cherries for Health

19 Feb

Do you love cherries? Did you know that they are really good for you? Cherries are the preferred juice of athletes for after a workout. It helps with pain relief because it has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. This makes them a healthier option than taking anti-inflammatory medicines or NSAIDs, which are hard on the stomach as well as our organs. In studies done at the University of Michigan they have found that drinking cherry juice can lower high triglycerides levels which is a precursor to heart disease, stroke and cancer. It can even help stabilize high blood pressure and heart rate.

Tart cherry juice contains melatonin which is the body’s chemical that helps with sleep. I would much rather drink a glass of cherry juice before going to bed than to take an over the counter or prescription medication. I have tried these in the past for my chronic insomnia and they just leave me feeling terrible and groggy in the morning.

If you don’t think drinking a glass of tart cherry juice is for you then eat some cherries each day or chop them up and mix them into cereal, pancakes and waffles or even cakes and breads. There are millions of recipes using cherries available at your fingertips all across the internet. One great place for recipes that I bet you would never think of is the Farmers Almanac. Yes that’s right!  Here’s one to make your own chunky cherry ice cream at home.   Try looking here for some amazing cherry juice concentrate.
