Home Remedies For Common Ailments

17 Mar

There are many home remedies for common ailments and most of them use ingredients that you probably already have in your home. With today being St. Patrick’s Day, I figured I would start with none other than hangover remedies. Many will over-imbibe today and tomorrow will need something to make them feel less than dead so here are some amazing home remedies!

Hangovers:  When you drink you have to urinate more and your body loses potassium at a high rate. Eat a banana to put a little giddy up back in your step.

Ginger is an amazing gift from nature and is an excellent way to combat nausea.  Grate a little fresh ginger and add to a cup of hot water or a tea to quell those feelings of nausea. No ginger around, drink ginger ale, a real ginger ale not Vernors which is  just a ginger flavored soda.

A classic hot drink is a mixture of honey, lemon and hot water, IT must be honey and not sugar. Honey contains natural fructose which speeds up the metabolizing of sugar which speeds up the metabolizing of alcohol.  Boil 1 cup water and mix in honey and lemon juice to taste.

Fresh Juice, especially orange, will help raise your blood sugar and combat some of the hangover. If you are nauseated or already throwing up, avoid the OJ it will make it worse.

Home Remedies for Constipation: Constipation occurs for many reasons but it all boils down to our body is lacking in something it needs to get the job done. The statistics say that more than 75% of us do not get the fiber we need on a daily basis and most of us should probably be taking a fiber supplement in one form or another. Laxatives are harsh and can cause more bloating, cramps and even some medical issues.  To stay regular it is recommended that we eat 6 ounces of whole grains each day. This includes starchy products, breads, cereal and certain veggies. Anything with more than 5 or 6 grams of fiber constitutes a high fiber item.

Apple juice and apple cider are natural laxatives. Make sure you are buying 100% apple juice and cider that has been pasteurized so that you don’t get sick. Also do this in moderation or you may be dealing with another problem: diarrhea.

Use 2 tbs of black strap molasses to relieve constipation. This should not be used daily to combat constipation because it is ridiculously high in calories and you will be trading one problem for another but once in a while should be fine. If you have never tasted black strap molasses, it is a very strong, intense taste so you may want to add to hot tea! You can also take natural honey 1 tbs 3 times a day as a preventative. You can also use 1 tsp  honey mixed with 1 tsp apple cider vinegar.

Headache remedies:  Did you know that headaches fall into 3 categories? Tension, migraine and cluster. I am a migraine sufferer and know how debilitating they can be.  Ginger helps reduce inflammation  and can help in many ways. You can chew on crystallized ginger for relief from more minor to moderate headaches. You can make it into a tea by boiling a cup of water and adding 1 tbs grated ginger ( fresh is always best) and 1 tsp honey and drinking it.  You can place a pot of boiling water on the stove and add a whole stalk of ginger cut into smaller pieces and inhale the vapors. Be careful with this one as steam can burn so do not place your face to close. I like adding water I have already boiled and added the ginger in, to a vaporizer for safer use.  You can also mix equal parts ginger and lemon juice and make a tea you drink daily to try to avoid those pesky tension headaches.  Ginger is a super food in my book and I almost always have it on hand. It is cheap and wondrous!!

Menthol is a component in mint and is very useful for headaches. Some are allergic so be careful.  You can take fresh mint leaves and moddle them until you get a liquid or juice. You can get a moddler at any place that sells house wares some call it a mortar and pestle. Place the juice on your forehead and temples. Again be careful because you could have an allergy you are unaware of or sensitive skin that could cause a rash. You can also get liquid menthol from anywhere that sells oils. Make sure it is a high-end blend that is 100% menthol not the fragrance oils you pick up at the dollar store or even chain stores. Online has a great selection and I get mine from Theorganicwitch.com  and am very happy with the products!  You can also make a mint tea compress and lay in the dark with it on your forehead for 20-30 minutes. Peppermint oil contains menthol and can also be used. The scent alone is enough to stop some headaches in their tracks. I have an electric tart burner in my living room and I use peppermint oil in it  A LOT! I get all of my oils from TheOrganicWitch.com. They are certified pure and organic and she is a certified aromatherapist.

Basil works as a sort of muscle relaxant and is helpful for mild to moderate tension headaches. You can make a tea with 4 fresh basil leaves, and 1 cup boiling water. Add a little honey for flavoring. I only use REAL honey and believe me, there is a difference. My hubby and I live in Michigan and we are blessed to have a local ( well a couple hundred miles away) store/farm that makes the most amazing honey products. They are the only company I buy from and we buy it by the case. We are huge tea drinkers and I use it in cooking and baking. Sleeping Bear Farms honey is amazing!!

You can also make a steam facial out of bay leaves and boiling water but remember to not get too close as you can get burns from the steam. This one you can also boil and then use in a vaporizer for safety.

Tooth Ache Pain:   Some of the worst pain ever felt by man can be a toothache. I have had some doozies in my life and they are just unbearable and it usually happens at 2 am where there is no chance of getting to a dentist and you need some relief. Products like Orajel work for a short time and may ease some of the pain but if it is a really bad toothache, I have found most products over the counter are useless against it. So here are a few to try. Remember there is no better help for a toothache than a dentist and you should see one right away for any pain but if that’s not possible these may help.

Use salt and pepper which both have anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties. Mix equal amounts of salt and pepper with a dab of water to form a paste and apply to affected area and allow it to sit for a few minutes before rinsing it out with water. They both are natural analgesics and can help with mild to moderate pain.

Garlic has antibiotic properties and can be effective in reducing pain. Mix a crushed garlic clove ( not garlic powder) with some table salt and apply directly to the painful area. You can do this several times a day. Remember to be wary of food allergies as some are allergic to garlic.

Cloves have anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antioxidant and anesthetic properties that help alleviate tooth pain and fight infection.

  • Grind two whole cloves. Mix in a little olive oil or any vegetable oil and apply on the affected tooth.
  • Another option is to dab a cotton ball in clove oil and rub it directly on the sore tooth. Or, you can mix a few drops of clove oil in half a glass of water and use it as a mouth rinse.

A simple glass of warm salt water can help treat a toothache. Mix half a spoon of common salt in a glass of hot water and use it to rinse your mouth thoroughly.

It will help reduce swelling and inflammation, and also fight the bacteria that cause infection.

Ear ache:  Ear aches, especially in children, can be one of the toughest things to deal with, especially in the middle of the night. Ear pain is horrendous for anyone and fast relief is much welcomed. Again you should always consult your doctor for any pain first, if possible as it may be a greater, underlying problem.

Olive oil can provide fast relief from an earache. It serves as a lubricant and helps get rid of an infection in the ear. Olive oil can also be helpful in stopping buzzing sensations inside the ears.

  • Put 3-4 drops of lukewarm olive oil as ear drops into the ear canal.
  • Alternatively, you can dip a cotton bud in the oil and put it firmly into the ear.

Garlic

The analgesic and antibiotic properties of garlic can help reduce ear ache caused by the pain of infection.

  • Heat one teaspoon of minced garlic in two tablespoons of sesame oil. Cool and filter the oil. Put 2-3 drops of this garlic oil in the aching ear.
  • Another option is to extract the juice out of a few cloves of garlic and put it into the ear that hurts.

Hot Water Bottle

Putting moist heat around an infected ear can work as a great pain reliever. Simply wrap a hot water bottle in a towel and press it against the aching ear for a few minutes.

Ginger has strong anti-inflammatory properties that can be helpful in treating ear infections. It is also an excellent natural painkiller.

  • Extract juice from fresh ginger and put it directly into the ears to get relief from pain and reduce inflammation.
  • You can also mix one teaspoon of fresh grated ginger root with two tablespoons of olive oil. Leave it to infuse for 5 to 10 minutes and then strain it and  put a few drops of the oil in the aching ear.

Both peppermint leaves and peppermint oil can be used to soothe earache.

  • Put the juice from fresh peppermint leaves in a dropper and then put some drops inside the aching ear.
  • Using a cotton swab, apply a few drops of peppermint oil externally around the opening of your ear. Avoid getting any of this oil inside your ear. You can also dilute the peppermint oil using olive oil and then apply.

Colic:  As the mother of a child who had severe colic from birth to about age 6 months, I know how awful it is to have your baby crying and in pain and not knowing what to do. My baby had colic 25 years ago and there was not the products available then that they have now so I relied on old wives tale cures and folklore to help my ailing baby and my stress from it.  The only thing the doctors told me to do then was to lay her belly down across my lap and rub her back  or to put a warm towel on her belly. Both of which, did not work. I thought I was going to go crazy walking the floor night after night and going days at a time with no sleep until someone was available to help out. I made it through and so did she by the grace of God and I hope these tips help you too!

Most babies with colic tend to like repetitive motion whether it’s a rocking motion while you walk or a ride in the car. This is a tried and true method to quiet a cranky baby with colic or not. Now a days they sell products that rock the baby for you but as a mother that lived through this I don’t think there is any substitution for the comfort that contact between mother and child affords! For centuries mothers have been swaddling and holding their babies through all sorts of maladies and it works. When it got really bad and I was ready to drop and was afraid I would fall asleep while holding her, I placed her in her seat and on top of the running dryer and it soothed her.

One mistake parents can make is waking a sleeping child. If you have never heard someone say DO NOT WAKE A SLEEPING BABY, I am telling you now! Unless the baby is in some sort of distress, leave him/her alone. DO NOT wake them up to visit with grandma or because you think they have been sleeping too long and something is wrong. Rest is the best medicine for just about any ailment and when your baby is sleeping he/she is comfortable and I suggest, like all of the experts, when they are sleeping, you should be too.

One huge problem that persists when you have a baby that is difficult to comfort is the parent becomes anxious and frustrated. Your baby can sense this and it aggravates the problem. I struggled with this myself. After 48 hours of absolutely no sleep and she was still crying I felt like I was going to have a nervous breakdown, like the world was ending. I looked like a zombie years before being a zombie was cool. My doctor told me that if I did not relax, neither would she. I worked on it daily and eventually got to the point where I could hold her without thinking I was going to fall asleep and drop her or like I was coming apart at the seams and it did help, it was easier to soothe her when I was calmer. This is extremely hard to do and let me tell you prayer and meditation go a long way.

A change in formula may be needed. Most formulas contain some version of cows milk and this can be the culprit in a lot of colic situations. I went through 5 or more formulas with my daughter and back then there was no soy based option on the market. My Doctor, who was well-advanced in age and believed in old school remedies put my daughter on a home-made formula that has been used for about a 100 years . It consisted of pet milk, water and dark caro syrup. Once my daughter was on this formula, the colic disappeared. It took 6 months to get there but it finally happened. She actually slept 6 hours at one time.  Now I am in no way saying you should go out and buy these items and switch your child’s formula because it worked for us, you should always consult your Doctor for any change in your child’s diet. Some children could be allergic to these items and only a doctor should prescribe it. I am sure most doctors today probably never even heard of this formula but you can google it and it is there.

Another huge help with a colic baby is a schedule. Feeding at regular intervals, bath time and bedtime rituals etc as continuity is your baby’s friend. They respond well to structure. The biggest thing I can tell you is to take time for you. Find someone who can watch the baby for even just an hour while you either catch a nap or take a long hot shower. A stressed out parent is no help to the distressed baby and the stress is no good for you either so take the minutes when you can get them and just be alone. It goes a long way to save your sanity.
